Week 5 Article on Writing and Technology

I really liked this article because it shows how an increase in technology usage among our teenage generation may be hindering their ability to write.  We all know how students write when they are talking with their friends over IM or facebook, so it is important to remember that through all of the amazing benefits that technology in the classroom has to offer, it may be ultimately taking a toll on that generations literacy skills.  I believe this article is valuable for everyone to read to see the other side of the spectrum, away from how technology is the way to go.  This article made me realize that sometimes too much technology or certain technologies can sometimes be more harmful than helpful.  We need to choose carefully what we are promoting.

  1. I agree! We see that through our college students too. We can use technologies, but we need to also stress on the writing conventions. :-)

    1. Yes, I agree that it is important to stress the proper and correct way to write. I feel that IM and texting is another language, as the article states, "Cyber Slang". I have had to Google 'text speak' acronyms in the past. I have also had students use some in writing assignments. They are aware, at least at the high school level, that it is not proper writing. We as teachers need to enforce correct writing.

  2. I agree, too much of anything can be a bad thing. With students using things like IM and Facebook, they often do not use proper English which, in the long run, can negatively affect students writing.
