Subject: Global History using edmodo as an online blended learning environment. Students will use edmodo to collaborate with classmates.
Grade level: middle school 7th grade.
Standards Addressed: ISTE & Common Core
Grade level: middle school 7th grade.
Standards Addressed: ISTE & Common Core
Common Core ELA Standards
L.7.1. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
L.7.2. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
L.7.3. Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening
L.7.6. Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases; gather vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or
phrase important to comprehension or expression
ISTE Standards:
Nets For Students
Creating and Innovation
· Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. Students:
a) apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes.
b) create original works as a means of personal or group expression.
c) use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues.
d) identify trends and forecast possibilities.
Communication and Collaboration
· Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. Students:
a) interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments and media.
b) communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats.
c) develop cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with learners of other cultures.
d) contribute to project teams to produce original works or solve problems.
Research and Information Fluency
· Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. Students:
a) plan strategies to guide inquiry.
b) locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media.
c) evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks.
d) process data and report results.
Digital Citizenship
· Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior. Students:
a) advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and technology.
b) exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity.
c) demonstrate personal responsibility for lifelong learning.
d) exhibit leadership for digital citizenship.
Technology Operations and Concepts
· Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations. Students:
a) understand and use technology systems.
b) select and use applications effectively and productively.
c) troubleshoot systems and applications.
d) transfer current knowledge to learning of new technologies.
Technology Operations
Intended results of the proposed technology integration (identify the professional development interests and needs from your ELA teachers and students, and potential technology to address their needs or interests)
Students are going to be exposed and taught to use edmodo to create a blended learning environment where they will be responsible for collaborating with classmates in their class on the current topics. A series of questions will be posted for students to examine, research, and then collaborate with their peers responding to the questions and deepening their understanding of the topic being discussed.
Support and format of training needed for the effective implementation of the selected technology in their classrooms.
Because I do not have a teaching job in a school right now I was not able to work closely with an ELA teacher on this project; however, I am working with a history teacher and training them on how to sign up for edmodo and create a closed class that the students will enter a code to enter the classroom environment. Because most ELA teachers are preparing their students for the ELA exam at the end of the month the administrators at the school I am working with were not able to get me into a class with an ELA teacher. Because the user interface is almost identical to facebook, the teacher as well as the students are already very familiar with how to navigate, post, and create various threads. The teacher was trained on how to post assignments, create polls, quizzes, videos, and various online resources.
Technology Requirements
This requires that the students go down to the computer lab and spend one class period signing up and practices accessing all that edmodo has to offer and how to contribute to this blended online learning environment. Once the students have signed up and entered the course code to enter this class they will be doing mostly all of the work from their home. For students that do not have access to a computer or internet at home they will be given ample time to complete assignments so they can use the school resources during their free time or after school once a week. There is a free app for this software that students can download on their smartphones also which creates a mobile learning environment for those students who have the right technology.
Evaluation plan (what is your plan to make sure that your training meets the goals, needs, and objectives)
The point of introducing this technology into this classroom is to infuse more collaboration and get students more involved outside of class, deepening their understanding of the topic being studied. The main idea here is to increase student participation, which will be easily tracked by the teacher and myself based on number of posts and amount of detail and effort included in each post. The teacher will have a number of opportunities to post various resources, polls, and questions that students will have access to at any time from their computers or smartphones. Collaboration will be tracked and tallied for participation credit. Students will also be working in groups to research a topics deeper and provide informative information to their peers. This will be graded using a checklist.
Article voice thread
I gained a lot of knowledge from this article, which taught
me not to assume as much as I do about new web tools or different
softwares. When the author writes, “The
specific design and functionality of a particular tool or technology does not
define its pedagogical usefulness. At
least not by itself. Rather there are
other important ingredients required including the imagination and creativity
of the individual user…” This drove home
an important point that we really need to consider our users when chosing these
web 2.0 tools and not just choosing them because of the pedagogical affordances
that come out of it. These are almost
always going to be beneficial, but users all react differently to different
tools based on their environments. When
using any Web 2.0, like voicethread, it is important for the tutor to have
sound planning, imagination, and creativity. Creating meaningful learning from
using this technology is important, but very difficult to achieve unless you
have covered yourself.
Most of the features that this technology has to offer seem
like a great set of tools for students to be exposed to in order to become 21st
century students and become more literate.
Most of these functions open up doors for collaboration where open discussions
can take place.
